» The NYLA Report Interview

Website The NYLA Report got the chance to do a cool interview with Whitney! Check it out below!

First, I want to ask what inspires you and your designs?
I’m inspired by so many different things. I think for the Spring 2011 Collection it was really a mix of my Los Angeles aesthetics and my New York aesthetics. It’s kind of like that easy going vibe of Los Angeles mixed with that more sophisticated street style of New York. And, I love color! I work with this print artist in the United Kingdom who helped me develop some really cool prints that I think represented my personal aesthetic, and I use them in more fun, flirty silhouettes.

Okay, so what design influences have contributed to this personal aesthetic and your ideas for designing?
Well, influences…I really grew up in the fashion industry. My dad had been working in the apparel industry for forever, and my mom is an artist and art teacher, so I think the mix of those two definitely had a major influence on me becoming a fashion designer.

You are certainly more down-to-earth than some of the other girls on The Hills, but you didn’t seem like the most obvious candidate for a spin-off.
Clearly, on The Hills I was not the most dramatic one, so you would never think I’d be capable of pulling off my own show. But I wanted to do it because it was so career-oriented, and it was based on something really happening in my life.

Do you find that your fans sometimes think you’re actually their friend?
Yes! That’s the weirdest part about it. People will be like, “Whit! How are you?” Or people
will call my name, and I’ll sort of get confused, and I’m not sure if I know the person or not.

On the other hand, some of the other Hills cast members–cough, Heidi and Spencer, cough–don’t seem relatable at all.
Yeah, they were always more extreme. Spencer actually went to my high school, and he was obviously a less magnified version of the person he is now. But nothing surprises me with him anymore.

Part of the appeal of The City was the “fish out of water” aspect of a California girl in the Big Apple. Did you think of yourself as a New Yorker?
I have a love-hate relationship with New York. I love the energy, I love the culture, I love the social aspect of it. But you don’t have the freedom to just get in your car and go anywhere you want. Sometimes I felt a bit trapped and landlocked.

Is it true you have never eaten spaghetti?
That’s true. Never eaten pasta. I don’t have any allergies or anything. I just don’t like the texture. It’s one of these weird things that kind of irks me, so I have no interest in trying it.

You’re super tall and skinny and had braces until you were a senior in high school. So were you one of those gawky girls who blossomed late?
I was the ugly duckling as a baby and a toddler. As I got a little older—granted, I did not look so
hot with braces—I wasn’t, like, horribly unfortunate looking. And I wasn’t tall in high school, which is weird. I didn’t get this tall until college. I had a really late growth spurt, and now I’m 5’10″.

Which is, like, the perfect height for a model! Is it true you wanted to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel?
That’s more of a dream. I mean, if they called me and were like, “Oh, my God, Whitney, we love you. We want you to walk the runway,” I’d consider it. But I don’t know if that would ever happen.

Hey, you look pretty great in these photos!
This was a big step for me, but I wanted to step out of my comfort zone a little bit, and I thought it would be a fun experience. I have always loved Maxim, and as much as it’s racy, it’s always tasteful and everybody looks really good.

» Whitney’s MTV Style Interview

Are you designing the accessories, shoes, or jewelry for the collection?
“No. Lulu Frost and DANNIJO are doing the jewelry, and Giuseppe Zanotti is doing the shoes. I really want to do accessories, it’s been something I’m interested in. A lot of what you see on The City is shot all from the torso up, and I think you can do a lot with statement pieces. I think people see me as someone who wears a lot of big jewelry, so it would be fun to do a costume jewelry type line. In the future — a dream.”

How is this show different than previous seasons?
“I definitely feel more ready. Whether it’s from working on other fashion shows or working in fashion in general, I feel really prepared. I feel like l can finally put out a collection that speaks to a lot more people. It’s not as boutique-y and it’s a lot more affordable this season.”

Why did you decide to make it more affordable?
“As fashion designers, we have to take note that it’s not fair to people who can’t buy $1,000 dress. All of my pieces are in affordable fabrics. There are T-shirts (which she tweeted about this summer), and spandex pieces that are layering pieces are $30. It ranges up to $400 for special pieces.”

» Exclusive Interview With Whitney!

Whitney was so kind to answer our questions for an exclusive interview! Here it is! Enjoy!

W-D.com: Let’s start with The City. How do you feel about sharing a part of your life with the camera’s?
It is always a mix of positive and negative for me. While I love being able to share my life and my passion (designing clothes) with everyone, it is also sometimes a little daunting to force myself to be that vulnarable. It is a sense of privacy that I have to give up but the sacrifice is very worth it.

W-D.com: Have you ever thought appearing on reality shows was a wrong decision?
Never! I have been so lucky with all of the opportunities I have been handed because of it.

W-D.com: After seeing the final episode of season 2, everybody was a bit shocked about what happened between you and Kelly. How is your relationship with Kelly at the moment?
My relationship with Kelly is totally fine. We totally understand the situation and she continues to be a mentor and consultant on my line and my life!

W-D.com: If there is coming a third season of The City, what do you think we will get to see?
You will continue to see the evolution of my line! The spring collection! All else is so up in the air!

W-D.com: Did you expected to become this famous after showing up on reality shows?
I never expected the famous aspect to be as big as it is! It is so surreal to think that I started as a measly intern at Teen Vogue and now have my own line which is featured on a tv show worldwide, so bizarre and sometimes I feel I am not worthy of all of it.

W-D.com: What’s the biggest thing a fan ever did to you?
Make this fan site! I am so honored and flattered!

W-D.com: Has the relationship between you and your family changed when you started filming The Hills and The City?
It has not changed a bit… My family are my backbone, my main support system. If they feel as if I am stepping out of line they make sure to bring me right back into “reality”.

W-D.com: Has your family always supported your choice to become a reality tv star and fashion designer?
They are extremely supportive! We are the best team around!

W-D.com: Where do you find your inspiration for the collections of Whitney Eve?
I get inspiration from almost anything every minute of the day. Whether I am looking a magazine, taking pictures of random people on the streets, recognizing colors in flowers and watching how waves crash, I am inspired by so much!

W-D.ocm: What can we expect in the upcoming collections of Whitney Eve?
A good mix of Los Angeles and New York feminity and sophistication. Fun patterns, soft fabrics and interesting textures.

We would like to thank Whitney so much for taking time to answer the questions

» Whitney in OK! Magazine And Photoshoot

If you think Whitney Port is a typical food-phobic fashion chick — think again. Her attitude toward her body, fitness and diet are refreshingly healthy. The star of MTV’s The City tells OK! that she’s not one to go hungry. “I’m a really big snacker!” Her favorite snacks: popcorn and frozen yogurt.

“If I don’t constantly have energy from food then I get in a bad mood.”  Whitney, 25, even allows herself one day a week — usually Sundays — to eat “what I want… Everything in moderation,” she says.

“There are times when I’ll look at someone and say, ‘I totally wish I looked like that,’” but Whitney swears she doesn’t stress about being a certain size.

To find out what Whitney does in the gym to maintain her lean physique, buy a copy of the new issue of OK! on stands everywhere! She is also  featured in our What I Ate Today weekly diet special where she tells us exactly what she  ate all day!
